To make pumpkin purée at home is much easier than you might think. All you need is a pumpkin, a little time in the oven, and a blender or food processor.

I prefer to roast the pumpkin rather than boil it. Roasting brings out its natural sweetness and gives the purée a deeper, richer flavour, while keeping it thick and creamy.

Homemade pumpkin purée can also be made ahead and kept in the refrigerator or frozen in portions, making it easy to have on hand whenever a recipe calls for it.

Why Make Your Own Pumpkin Purée?

Pumpkin is one of those ingredients I always look forward to when autumn arrives. Naturally sweet, creamy and full of flavour, it is also a nutritious addition to both sweet and savoury dishes.

Pumpkin is a good source of fibre, beta-carotene and potassium, along with other vitamins and antioxidants. Its naturally creamy texture means you can use it to add richness to recipes without necessarily relying on cream or other heavier ingredients.

Making pumpkin purée at home is a simple way to make the most of pumpkin season. Once roasted and blended, it becomes a wonderfully versatile ingredient that you can use in so many different ways.

What Can You Make with Pumpkin Purée?

A batch of homemade pumpkin purée can be used for much more than pumpkin pie. Keep some in the refrigerator to use during the week, or freeze it in portions so you always have some ready when you need it.

Here are some of my favourite ways to use it:

Soups: Add it to creamy autumn soups, such as my Pumpkin Apple Curry Soup, or use it as the base for a simple pumpkin and vegetable soup.

Cakes, pies & tarts: Pumpkin purée works beautifully in pumpkin pie, cakes, muffins, loaf cakes and other autumn bakes. It adds moisture, a lovely natural sweetness and a soft texture.

Breads & breakfast bakes: Use it in pumpkin bread, rolls, pancakes, waffles or baked oatmeal for a little extra flavour and colour.

Savoury dishes: Pumpkin purée can be stirred into pasta sauces, risottos or creamy vegetable dishes. It also works beautifully with warm spices, herbs and cheeses.

Breakfasts & snacks: Add a spoonful to porridge, overnight oats, yoghurt or smoothies for an easy seasonal twist.

Homemade treats for our four-legged friends: Plain pumpkin purée can also be used in some homemade dog treats and recipes. It is naturally rich in fibre and can be a useful ingredient in dog-friendly bakes.

When preparing anything for dogs, use plain pumpkin purée without sugar, salt, spices or other added ingredients, and make sure the recipe contains only ingredients that are safe for dogs.

A Little Pumpkin Goes a Long Way

One of the things I love about making pumpkin purée is that it can be prepared ahead and used gradually. You don't need to find a recipe for all of it at once.

Freeze the purée in small portions, even in ice-cube trays for smaller quantities, and simply take out what you need. It is a lovely way to preserve some of autumn's harvest and have pumpkin ready for cooking and baking throughout the colder months.

Helpful Tips

Choose the right pumpkin: Smaller, sweeter varieties such as sugar pumpkins or other culinary pumpkins tend to make a smoother and more flavourful purée than large carving pumpkins.

Keep it thick: Roasting rather than boiling helps prevent the purée from becoming watery. If your pumpkin releases a lot of moisture, let the purée drain through a fine-mesh sieve for a little while before using.

Make a larger batch: Pumpkin purée freezes very well, so it is worth making extra when pumpkins are in season. Freeze it in measured portions so you can easily use exactly what you need for a recipe.

How To Make Pumpkin Purée

Making your own pumpkin purée is simple, and roasting the pumpkin first brings out its natural sweetness and gives the purée a rich, creamy texture. It’s a wonderfully versatile ingredient for soups, cakes, pies, breads and even homemade treats for our four-legged friends.

Prep: 10 min | Roasting: 40–50 min | Total: 50–60 min | Yield: 500–600 g pumpkin purée

Ingredients

  • 1 medium pumpkin, approximately 1.2–1.5 kg

  • 1–2 tbsp water, if needed when blending

Method

1. Prepare the pumpkin

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Wash the pumpkin and cut it in half. Scoop out the seeds and stringy fibres with a spoon. You can save the seeds for roasting separately.

Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

2. Roast

Roast for 40–50 minutes, depending on the size and variety of the pumpkin, until the flesh is very tender and can easily be pierced with a fork. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool enough to handle.

3. Scoop out the flesh

Scoop the soft pumpkin flesh away from the skin and place it in a food processor or blender.

4. Blend until smooth

Blend until completely smooth and creamy. If the purée is too thick to blend easily, add a tablespoon or two of water, but try to keep it as thick as possible.

5. Use or store

The pumpkin purée can be used immediately or cooled completely and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Enjoy!

Note

1. For longer storage, spoon the purée into airtight containers or freezer bags and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.
